Dr. Maria Boile is Professor of Port and Terminal Policy and Management at the Department of Maritime Studies and Director of the Quantitative Analysis in Shipping Laboratory at the University of Piraeus. She has served as Research Director at the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) at the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) and the Rutgers CAIT: Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation at Rutgers University in the US. She also serves as Coordinator of the European Waterborne Technology Platform. Her field of expertise is “Port and Terminal Policy and Management”. Within the scope of QuALS, her research focuses on the quantitative analysis of port and terminal operations, maritime infrastructure planning, policy evaluation, and strategic decision-making. She leads interdisciplina projects addressing port sustainability, capacity optimization, and multimodal integration, linking infrastructure investment with environmental and operational performance. Her work directly supports the lab’s mission to provide evidence-based insights for shaping future-ready port systems. She is also actively involved in international policy dialogue and institutional cooperation, bridging academic research with EU and national policy agendas, and contributing to knowledge transfer and high-level training programs globally.

Dr. Alexander Artikis is the Deputy Director of QuALS, Professor of Maritime Informatics at the Department of Maritime Studies at the University of Piraeus, and Affiliated Faculty/Research Associate at NCSR Demokritos. His field of expertise is “Information Technology in Shipping and Transport”. His research focuses on complex event processing, real-time analytics, and AI based decision systems, all of which are central to QuALS’ digital transformation agenda. He contributes to the development of predictive algorithms, intelligent monitoring systems, and advanced maritime information platforms, enhancing the lab’s capabilities in automation, situational awareness, and operational optimization. He also plays a leading role in interdisciplina research projects that integrate computer science, operations research and maritime domain knowledge, supporting the lab’s mission to pioneer next-generation digital solutions for the shipping industry.

Stratos Papadimitriou is a Professor at the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus teaching transport planning and logistic courses and is the Director of the Transportation Systems Laboratory. He has been the Chairman BoD of the Athens International Airport from 2010 to 2012 and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) from 1997 to 2002 among past assignments. During his five-year tenure at OASA, the public transportation companies under the OASA umbrella including the Athens METRO and Light Rail systems were reorganized and restructured financially, a major investment plan was implemented, and a variety of innovative programs were introduced which modernized public transport in greater Athens and improved mobility. He has also served as an advisor to Ministers of Transport for national and European affairs and has acted as a consultant in various entities. Currently he is an advisor to the founder of a NYSE listed major ship owning company. He has been involved in managing and participating more than 20 European Union funded research projects regarding transport planning, logistics, maritime and urban transport. He serves regularly as an evaluator in DG MOVE / REA (CeF) Research Framework programs and for the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA). Peter J. Stavroulakis is a Diplomate Mechanical and Production Engineer (National Technical University of Athens), with a master’s degree in business administration from the Agricultural University of Athens, a master’s degree in occupational and environmental health from the Medical School of Athens, and a PhD from the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, in which he also completed his post-doctoral research in the field of sustainability of maritime clusters. He also holds training certificates in the fields of child and adolescent psychopathology and psychodynamic psychotherapy. For a number of years he was an external partner of the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education and a member of the academic staff at the American College of Greece, until the moment of his appointment at the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus. Peter holds many collaborations with private and public bodies such as the Hellenic Army, the Athens Transportation Organization, Attiki Odos, the National Technical University of Athens, and the University of West Attica. His discipline concerns maritime technology and management science and his research interests refer to the analysis of the functional and constructional elements of ships and modern methods and tools for managing maritime businesses in relation to existing and emerging technologies, their applications, development, and improvement.

Dr. Vangelis Tsioumas is an Assistant Professor of Quantitative Methods in Shipping at the Department of Maritime Studies, University of Piraeus. Dr. Tsioumas has an extensive record of research, teaching, and administration. He holds a PhD from the Department of Maritime Studies at the University of Piraeus, an MSc in Risk Management & Financial Engineering from Imperial College Business School, and a BSc & MSc in Applied Mathematics from National Technical University of Athens.
Dr. Tsioumas has published numerous research articles in the areas of shipping market modeling and strategic management using analytical tools. He has also served as a reviewer for several journals. Furthermore, Dr. Tsioumas conducted research at the Athens University of Economics and Business as a Post-doctoral Fellow and at New York University (NYU) as a visiting scholar.
In the past, Dr. Tsioumas lectured at the Department of Naval Architecture, University of West Attica in both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs; at the Department of Port Management and Shipping, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; and at the American College of Greece – Deree, where he served as the Head of the Department of Maritime Transport & Logistics and as an inaugural fellow of the Center of Excellence in Shipping, Logistics & Transportation (CoELST). He was awarded a Stipend for Excellence in Teaching at Deree during 2017-18.
Dr. Tsioumas has several years of work experience in the maritime industry as a shipping market analyst and chartering broker. He is also a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS). Moreover, he has participated in various European research and consulting projects in the areas of shipping and port management. Anastasios K. Ziakas is an economist and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Piraeus, and member of the Quantitative Analysis in Shipping Laboratory since April 2022. He is also a member of the Economic Chamber of Greece since 2019. He serves as a Research Associate at the University of Piraeus Research Center (UPRC). He holds a Bachelor in Business Administration from the Athens University of Economics and Business (2019) and an MSc in Shipping from the University of Piraeus (2021), with a thesis on dry ports’ location selection. His expertise includes data analysis, economics, finance, and Python-based data modeling. His research focuses on coastal shipping, environmental economics, and sustainable shipping, with a particular interest in maritime energy transition. Lila Perra is an Urban and Regional Planner and a PhD candidate at the University of Piraeus. She has been a member of the Quantitative Analysis in Shipping Laboratory, UniPi since 2021.
